Professor SUNY Empire selected for Fulbright Specialist Roster – Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Deborah Jean Smith, Ed.D., professor at SUNY Empire State College School for Undergraduate Studies, has been named to the Fulbright Specialist List for a four-year term, which began October 8, 2021.

Scholars are selected for the Fulbright Specialist List based on their knowledge, skills, and ability to make a meaningful contribution to overseas projects, with the aim of bringing their in-depth knowledge back to their US institution.

As a candidate on the Fulbright Specialist List, Smith is eligible to be associated with projects at host institutions in over 150 countries to share her expertise in e-learning, prior learning assessment ( PLA) and Professional Learning Assessment (PLE). His project work will focus on how the development, design and deployment of online courses and pedagogy for adult learners compare across institutions.

“A Fulbright host institution can learn to create and adaptively use technology to improve the user experience in adult learning by examining aspects of e-learning and PLA / PLE,” said Smith in a press release.

Smith worked internationally before being selected for the Fulbright Specialist Roster. In 2004, she taught humanities classes in person as part of the SUNY Empire Lebanon residency program for two weeks every two years.

Smith has also volunteered for other short-term international programs. In 2012, she traveled to the eastern fjords of Iceland for two weeks, helping to restore the unearthed monastery and hospital at Skriðuklaustur, and learning how to build Icelandic stone walls. In 2018, she was awarded the Zhi-Xing China Academic Impact Fellowship from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, traveling to China for three weeks, visiting educational institutions, businesses and cultural venues in Shanghai, Xian and Beijing.

“In all the international trips I take, I try to learn something about the language, to better understand the culture, to eat food and to rediscover the differences and similarities that make us unique and yet unite us” , Smith continued. “As a Fulbright Specialist, I hope to continue this useful cultural sharing and appreciation.”
