New Child Protection Center Opens in Chua Chu Kang to Tackle Rising Abuse Cases

SINGAPORE – A new specialist child protection center is set to open in Chua Chu Kang next month to provide support and intervention for families and children who experience severe abuse or neglect at home.

New Heart @ Fei Yue is the second community center specializing in child protection by Fei Yue Community Services.

As the Heart @ Fei Yue in Redhill, he will handle moderate child protection cases referred by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) that do not require legal protection.

For example, it will help support families where parents may face financial stressors and use harsh punishment methods for their children or fail to provide them with adequate care.

It will also help children struggling with trauma issues.

The new centre, which was launched and funded by MSF, comes as cases of child abuse have continued to rise after hitting a 10-year high in 2020.

“It’s not just the increase in cases that we have to deal with, but also the type and complexity of the cases,” said Ms. Ng Sook Wai, senior adviser at Heart @ Fei Yue.

“The Chua Chu Kang center will help manage the numbers and manage a faster response in the north and west.”

Its staff is trained in social work, psychology and therapy, among other disciplines. The center will also have an art therapy room and a play therapy room.

For example, it can offer parent-child bonding and in-home parenting interventions that can help parents who are struggling to manage their teenage children.

Social workers can involve the family service center and the school to assess what is causing challenges in the family, which could be due to work pressures, temporary financial difficulties, illness or injury.

In some cases, the child may have a learning disability, but the parents do not know how to get help.

Ms Ng said the center will work to identify families’ needs and ensure that its social workers and specialist staff are equipped to help specific types of cases.

Apart from the two Heart @ Fei Yue Centers, two Big Love Centers in Toa Payoh and Bedok also deal with moderate child protection issues.

The fifth child protection specialist center, Pave Integrated Services for Individual and Family Protection Specialist Center in Ang Mo Kio, supports families dealing with both domestic violence and child protection issues.
