HTC Viverse release date, price and spec rumors

HTC was once one of the most popular brands for Android phones. Its Desire series was a triumph in both design and functionality, but over time the brand faded, releasing a series of handsets that failed to sell.

After selling part of its phone business to Google in 2018, it looked like the company would follow the lead of LG and Blackberry. But, rumors are spreading fast that the Taiwanese innovators could be about to launch a comeback, with a phone that would be unlike anything on the market.

Here’s everything we know about the HTC Viverse phone.

When will the HTC Viverse phone be released?

There has been no official announcement as such on when we might see the HTC Viverse phone.

Digitimes in Taiwan reported that HTC chief executive Charles Huang said at Mobile World Congress 2022 in March that the company would announce a new high-end smartphone in April 2022, which would focus on the Metaverse. That doesn’t seem to have happened, so we don’t know when HTC might make their announcement.

How it will work is uncertain, with the Metaverse seen as the next iteration of the internet, but this time in immersive 3D via VR and AR technologies. Still, we’re all set to find out how HTC thinks this might apply to smartphones.

At MWC 2022, the company showcased its take on the Viverse, which appears to be its own version of the Metaverse. So it makes sense that a phone would join the other products it’s currently building to let people into this virtual world of the future.

How much will the HTC Viverse phone cost?

There are no details on the potential cost of any new device from HTC at the time of writing. For all of the AR and VR capabilities to be seamless enough for a phone designed with the Metaverse in mind, it would need a powerful processor and high-end cameras.

Looking around at other flagships that have these sorts of specs, we think it’s likely you can find the price north of £1000/$1000.

What about HTC Viverse phone specs?

Such is the mysterious nature of the HTC Viverse phone, there’s hardly any information online about what kind of components we can expect to see.

In the company’s keynote at MWC 2022, HTC President and Co-Founder Cher Wang confirmed that the Viverse will be built on a foundation of technologies such as AR/VR, AI, blockchain and 5G fast. We’ve seen some unusually designed devices along this line before, such as the HTC Exodus 1 which was crypto-focused, so a Metaverse phone isn’t as cracking as you might think.

HTC has also worked hard to develop its Vive VR product line as well as a huge software environment for AR/VR, making it one of the most advanced companies in this field. It also states in its promotional videos, and was reiterated by Cher Wang, that “Viverse will strive to be accessible to everyone, from any online device, through our Vive Connect tool.”

From this we can deduce that the Viverse phone should at least feature 5G, perhaps the mmWave variety which is the fastest currently available, and will need a solid complement of cameras to be able to handle the demands of rendering and placement of AR content on screen. .

Again, a powerful processor is needed to crunch these numbers, so we’d be surprised to see anything other than a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 if the HTC Viverse arrives soon.

In one of the Viverse’s promotional videos, we saw someone wearing an HTC Vive VR headset but also using a smartphone at the same time. So, it’s possible the phone could be a kind of controller to adjust settings or handle the communication side of things while users are immersed in a VR environment.

Of course, it may turn out to be a standard flagship phone with some specialized apps included. Hopefully we won’t have long to wait.
