Fine Furniture Specialist Receives Distinguished Alumni Award from Camosun – Vancouver Island Free Daily

Thinking outside the box to succeed in his craft of custom furniture and lighting design led Mike Randall to receive Camosun College’s 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award.

After honing his skills in 2010 through the college’s 40-week fine furniture program, the designer-maker, wood-bending expert and owner of Mike Randall Designs has since built a reputation for creating products to suit every customer. and his property.

“The Fine Furniture Program is an incredible opportunity to learn good design, learn perfection, and step out of your comfort zone,” he said in a statement. “I was under the watchful eye of amazing teachers whom I recruited as mentors to give me advice and guidance every step of the way.”

One such trainer, Sandra Carr, recognized from personal experience how difficult it can be to succeed as a designer-maker.

“Mike has enjoyed long-term success and continues to be recognized for his talent. I’m very proud of his accomplishments,” she said.

Proudly neurodiverse, Randall said his non-linear and dyslexic thinking fuels his ability to create forms that push boundaries.

From his toiling days in the Jack White Building at the Interurban Campus, Randall developed a love for solving problems through design and for making complex ideas more refined. Now working with a business coach to strengthen the focus and marketing elements of his operation, he credits his training at Camosun with giving him “the skills, knowledge and courage to get to where I am today. ‘today’.

Her message to today’s college graduates is to “never stop learning and never give up on your dreams” because graduating from a chosen course is only the first step.

“It’s hard work to get really good at what you do. You have to be able to adapt and grow, rise from failures, keep up to date with current thinking and technology, and develop the courage to challenge the status quo. That’s how we learn.
